The Chocolate War

So I have recently finished reading another book for a school project. This project was for me and my class to read challenged books and then convince the "library board" to keep the book or to ban it. So I decided to read The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier.
The Chocolate War was challenged for these reasons:
  • Violence
  • Sexual Refrences
  • Profane Language
  • Gangs and Corrupt Teachers

This book has many good moral lessons so I would definatly never ban it from anywhere. I would simply shelve the book in the young adults section.

Summary:

Jerry Renault has just moved to a new Catholic school called Trinity High School. He just wants to get by in life. But in school, there is a gang called "The Vigils" and they terrorize the other students into making them do what they want. They give students "assignments" to finish. There is also a teacher named Brother Leon and he uses the same tactics as The Vigils to get students to sell chocolates. In Renault's locker, there is a poster that says, "Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?" Later on in the story, Renault gets an assignment that says he must refuse Brother Leon when he is asked to sell chocolates. Even though his assignment is over after a short while, he still refuses Brother Leon. This causes many problems in Jerry's life.
